What are the main pro's and con's of each ? Who gives you more mods and customization ?
Any feedback welcome!

FreeForums give you more simple mods I think. But Prophpbb allows FAR more customization.

Right at this moment the scales are tipped so far in prophpbb's favor that its not even close...

See the cursor here? You can add things globally with the footer mod..

Cursors backgrounds and all the things you could do with phpbb2's site description you can do with the footer mod including adding things like affiliates to your board footer.

One easy fix for a background in prophpbb.com is to place this code in your footer mod:
Code:
<BODY background="http://forumnut.net/tabbed_portal/bg.gif" bgproperties="fixed">

You can change the direct link to the image to any image you want to run in your background. Its really just that easy in many styles

Some styles however already have a background image hard coded into the theme. To see it work try using prosilver. Once you see your background there,.. then switch to other styles and you will see what I mean. :D

You can also place this code in the code checker to see it work. ;)

off the top of my head:

FreeForums.org:
The only good side is some of their mods, when they actually work!

ProphpBB.com:
Standard phpBB3 installation - however some things are not able to be added like attachments, forum bots, module management, mail mail & mass PM.
Customisation- you can customise the CSS via the ACP theme editor (remember to press Ctrl + F5 to update your broswer cache), mix and match your themes, templates & imagesets. You can also upload upto 20 images or use externally hosted images.
HTML Footer Mod- as FN said, you can add HTML code globally
No Ads to Registered Members- The only ads you get are little green text ads from infolinks to guests to pay server costs
Better Stabilty & UpTime! MD (the admin & owner) will not install any mods that will take up too much resources.
Go Premium (forum upgrades like no ads, attachments, etc.) or Advanced With Them (FTP access, etc.) without leaving the ProphpBB support behind.

can your (my) existing FF board be transferred to Prophpbb seamlessly and without losing post counts for my 450+ posters?

It should be able to be moved.. However you'll have to check on the prophpbb.com support boards to see if they are doing imports.
