I have been having a bit of trouble with spammers posting links to buy fake Viagra and other such junk. Because of this I created a SPAM GOES HERE forum (only viewable by guests that land on the index page rather than the portal) in the hope that they would post there as guests rather than register (so far it is working).
I have it set up so that members that are signed in do not see the forum, but the posts still appear in the Latest News box on my portal.

Is there a way to stop them seeing the posts too?

As it is now they can see the post, but can't read it. I would like it if the real users didn't have to see the post at all. If I can get it to work this way, I won't have to delete posts every couple of hours.

You might want to try activating captua :

ACP>General(TAB)>Board configuration(SECTION)>User registration settings(LINK)>Geneal Options(SECTION ON PAGE)>Enable visual confirmation for registrations(SET TO YES)>Scroll down and click Submit button

Now go copy the spam email list and load it into your banned email addresses:
Spam Blocker Email list
ACP>Users and Groups(TAB)>User security(SECTION)>Ban e-mails(LINK)>Ban one or more e-mail addresses(SECTION ON PAGE)>Put entire list into the email box and click the submit button.

Now give guests read only permissions on all your forums (IF YOU WANT THEM READABLE BY GUESTS)

Now check all your bot registration emails against the spam list and if you don't see one of them there add it manually to your email bans list and also to the Spam Blocker Email list thread on this board.

I think that will solve your spam issues.

I already have the Captua set up, that was one of the first things I did when I created the board. I was trying to hold out on the Spam list for a little while, as so far I only have a problem with people using Google email addresses. But I don't want to ban these completely as I have some real users that have Google as their email account.

I think the Spam on my board is coming from people rather than bots as they get past the captua. Is it possible to set permissions to ban my real members from seeing the Spam goes here forum? I don't mind spammers posting their crap in there so long as registered users don't have to see it.

Well you could set up your permissions so that registered members can not see that forum. But remember that the more of that that you allow the more of it that will come to your board. and after a while hey will not be satisfied to outside any longer and want to post on your most active threads because that's where the traffic is.

But if you want to try it then go to:

ACP>Permissions(TAB)>Forum based permissions(SECTION)>Forum permissions(LINK)>Select a forum(DROP DOWN MENU)>SELECT YOUR SPAM FORUM>Click on the "Submit" button>GO TO: "GROUPS"/ Manage groups>highlight "Registered Users">Click on "Edit Permissions" button>GO TO: the drop down menu>select "no access"> Now click on "Apply All Permissions" button

Close and exit/ACP and your done

Thanks FN. I know you are right. I just thought that for now it will make the spammers life easier, strange as that sounds in my head it works lol. If I make their life easier I'm hoping it will make mine easier as I won't have to delete as many users. If they can post there, and if I don't delete the posts it might give the impression that the forum gets a lot of traffic. I reasoned to myself that if I were posting these spam links, I would want to spend less time registering and more time posting them. Since I created the forum not one has signed up, where as before I was getting 3-4 a day. I'm still getting the posts, but they are going into the spam forum.

When it fails miserably I grant you the right to gloat and say I told you so lol.

Thanks for the help once again FN.

Off topic have you had any experience with Zymic?

It is. I have set up a website there as a test. It allows you to use ftp and you can upload your own phpbb3 setup, which gives you more options in the acp like back ups and other stuff. But I can't work out if I would be better off moving there. Was looking for your professional opinion lol.
